What should a packaging conveyor interface specification contain?

A complete interface specification defines the mechanical transfer, product condition, controls, safety boundary, responsibility and acceptance evidence between the conveyor and each connected machine.

Write one interface schedule for every machine connection.

The schedule should identify fixed mechanical datums, product flow and pitch, usable width, transfer support, machine-ready and blocked states, start/stop permissions, faults, emergency-stop and guarding boundaries, utilities, access and the test that proves the connection. Each line item needs a named owner; “by others” should not be used without stating the actual party and deliverable.

What is a mechanical interface datum?

A mechanical interface datum is a fixed reference from which working height, centreline, transfer position and product direction are measured. It allows different suppliers to design to the same physical point. The datum should be visible on the approved drawing and usable during installation, rather than inferred from a movable guard or adjustable guide.

Which supplier owns the transfer point?

The project should assign ownership of the final support geometry, transfer plate or nose, adjustment, guarding, installation and product test. The conveyor supplier may provide one part and the machine supplier another, but one party must coordinate the complete transfer. Ownership should be written in the interface matrix, not assumed from where the equipment boundary is drawn.

Which line states belong in the controls schedule?

Include ready, running, starved, blocked, faulted, emergency-stopped, reset, manual/setup and restart states that affect product movement. State the signal source, destination, normal condition, loss-of-signal response and timing or confirmation required. The exact states depend on the installed control architecture, but every expected transition should have an agreed response.

How should guarding responsibility be divided across an interface?

Divide supply tasks, not the final safety outcome. Identify who designs and supplies each guard, infill panel, interlock and access arrangement, then name the competent party responsible for assessing and validating the complete installed interface. What makes an interface acceptance test measurable?

The test names the product, condition, line rate, pitch or orientation, machine states, duration or cycle count and observable pass criteria. It also includes the limiting transfer and recovery after a stop. “Runs smoothly” is not measurable; “the identified samples cross the transfer and the line restarts from the defined blocked state without a tip, jam or wrong product release” is.

Close every interface assumption before installation.

Use revision-controlled drawings and a responsibility matrix. When an item cannot yet be fixed, record the owner and closing evidence, such as a machine drawing, site measurement, product trial or controls review. This prevents late changes to working height, transfer support or safety boundaries from being treated as minor installation issues.
