Can one packaging line use several conveyor types?

Yes. A line may use slat chain for guided bottle transport, a short side-grip section for base coding, a controlled belt zone before inspection and a rotary or inline buffer after processing. The key is to define the product state and control duty at every transition so each conveyor type solves a clear problem rather than adding an unnecessary interface.

When is a continuous belt a poor starting point?

A continuous belt may be a poor starting point when the product must negotiate a tight chain curve, expose its base, tolerate sustained accumulation without surface contact, or remain positioned by a container-specific guide geometry that the belt route cannot provide. It can still be part of the line; the decision should follow the limiting product and transfer test.

Why is a conveyor name not a complete specification?

The name does not define usable width, working height, support surface, transfer geometry, speed range, drive position, guides, controls, environment, guarding or acceptance conditions. Two “belt conveyors” can therefore suit completely different duties. A usable specification links the equipment family to the actual pack, machine interfaces and operating sequence.

What evidence should decide the final conveyor family?

Use representative product samples, a measured layout, machine interface drawings, the required good output, normal and abnormal line states, cleaning method and a witnessed product trial. The final choice should show stable transfer, controlled restart, acceptable product contact and practical access under the agreed conditions.
